PENSACAN
Calling all CANchitects and CANgineers! Assemble your build team and help us Demolish Hunger, Design Hope in this year's PensaCAN competition. PensaCAN is a competition where teams create impressive structures made entirely out of full cans of food. Following a week-long display of the structures and voting, all food is then donated to Manna for distribution to our neighbors in need in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties. Registration is open to ANYONE...architects, intern architects, engineers, designers, contractors, local businesses, professors, teachers, students, or anybody, anywhere, that wants to form a team and help the local community. Do not have a team but still want to build? Register as an individual and we will match you up with a team! The display and on-site location is the Cordova Mall, but off-site and digital builds can take place anywhere (just follow the directions/requirements on the Info Packet Coversheet and Judging Guidelines). Awards will be presented in eight categories. Not a builder but still want to help? Great sponsorships are available, or you can make a donation HERE (use the "in honor of" field and type "PensaCAN"). Help us break 20,000 meals this year! |
CULTIVATING NEIGHBORHOODS & THE SMALL SCALE DEVELOPMENT MOVEMENT
This initiative is funded by the Panama City CRA and championed by Ward 2 City Commissioner Janice Lucas. In the aftermath of Hurricane Michael in 2018, Panama City has been steadily working to rebuild. The Category 5 storm left behind a landscape of vacant lots and demolished structures but also opened the door for new opportunities. With resources to rebuild limited, the CRA focuses on connecting developable properties with capable local developers while helping property owners realize the potential of their land. This project embraces the principles of incremental development - a people-centered, financially sustainable approach to community growth. Instead of relying on large-scale developments that can displace residents and strain public resources, incremental development supports smaller, context-sensitive projects such as duplexes, corner stores, and main street building renovations. The initiative brings together a broad network of stakeholders committed to strengthening communities through small-scale, thoughtful development:

SEPTEMBER CE LUNCHES
Outdoor Learning, The Outdoor Environment, and How Both Can Combat Toxic Stress Course Description Outdoor Learning has become a new trend in education, but how can we ensure we aren’t just building a million dollar shade structure that won’t be used? Current research supports the use of outdoor learning to combat toxic stress and negative effects of trauma. And, after we’ve all experienced the realities of living through a pandemic, outdoor learning has become that much more important as a tool for good health. So how can we support schools to ensure outdoor spaces are used? First, we will look at what the research says about the benefits of outdoor learning. But then we will move a step further to look at types of outdoor learning experiences and how outdoor environments can support easy use of these beneficial spaces. 1 HSW This course also provides credit for the following organizations: IDCEC (ASID, IDC, IDEC, IIDA) CEU Lunch Meetings are a benefit of membership in AIA Florida Northwest Any non-member attending will be charged $20 for cost of lunch.
